What is Tetrahydrocurcumin?

Tetrahydrocurcumin (THC) is an important derivative of Curcumin, which is obtained by hydrogenation reduction of the double bonds in the Curcumin molecule.

The molecular structure of natural curcumin (found in turmeric and turmeric, etc.) contains two benzene rings connected by an α,β-unsaturated ketone group. The double bond (enone structure) is reduced under hydrogenation conditions to form tetrahydrocurcumin (four hydrogen atoms added to the double bond), making its structure more stable, especially its tolerance to light, heat and pH changes.

What are the effects of tetrahydrocurcumin?

1. Antioxidant effect:
It retains the antioxidant capacity of curcumin, can scavenge free radicals (such as DPPH, hydroxyl radicals), and inhibit lipid peroxidation. Its antioxidant activity may be adjusted due to structural saturation (some studies show that its antioxidant capacity is equivalent to or slightly lower than that of curcumin).
2. Anti-inflammatory properties:
It exerts anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting inflammation-related pathways such as NF-κB and COX-2, and shows improvement effects in models such as arthritis and intestinal inflammation.
3. Neuroprotection: It may reduce Aβ protein deposition and improve cognitive function through the blood-brain barrier (animal studies).
4. Metabolic regulation: Regulate sugar and lipid metabolism and improve resistance (in vitro and animal experiments).
5. Skin protection: Anti-ultraviolet damage, inhibit melanin production (used in the cosmetics field)
