Chemical structure

Lipoic acid exists as a mixture of two structural forms: closed-loop disulfide and open chain reduction. These two forms are converted to each other through an oxidation-reduction cycle. Like biotin, lipoic acid often does not exist free, but rather exists as a lysine residue in its carboxyl homologous enzyme molecule (such as dihydrolipoate acetyltransferase) ε- The NH2 group is covalently bound by amide bonds (structurally similar to biotin).
